How to Determine Your Correct Underwire Size
Did you know that your bra size does not necessarily tell you which underwire size you need?
One of the questions I often receive at Bra Makers South Africa is: "I wear a 36C bra. What size underwire should I order?"
Unfortunately, it isn't quite that simple!
Different bra manufacturers use different underwire shapes, types and sizing systems. This means that an underwire from one brand may be completely different from an underwire with the same size number from another brand.
Even two bras labelled the same size can have different underwires.
That is why I always recommend measuring an underwire that you already have, rather than choosing an underwire based only on your bra size.
Why Are Underwire Sizes Different?
There is no single universal underwire sizing system used by every bra manufacturer.
Underwires come in different shapes and styles, including:
- Regular underwires
- Vertical underwires
- Short Underwires
- Long Underwires
Some underwires are designed for fuller cups, while others are intended for different bra styles or breast shapes.
For example, a size 40 underwire from one manufacturer may not have the same measurements or shape as a size 40 underwire from another manufacturer.
Remember: Your bra size and your underwire size are not necessarily the same thing!
How to Measure Your Existing Underwire
The easiest way to determine which underwire to order is to measure one from a bra that fits you comfortably.
Step 1: Find a Bra That Fits Well
Choose a bra where the underwire sits comfortably around your breast without digging in or sitting on breast tissue.
If possible, use an underwire that has been removed from the bra. This will give you a more accurate measurement.
Step 2: Measure Along the Curve
Using a flexible measuring tape, measure the underwire from one tip to the other, following the entire curve of the wire.
Do not measure straight across from one tip to the other!
You need the length of the actual curved underwire, not the straight-line distance between its ends.
Step 3: Record Your Measurement in Centimeters
Write down the measurement in centimeters (cm).
For example, if your underwire measures 26cm along the curve, you will need to look for an underwire with a similar curved length. Most underwires in South Africa are vertical or short underwires. Bra Makers South Africa sells both, but not in all of the sizes.
Step 4: Compare Your Measurement With Our Website
On the Bra Makers South Africa website, the measurements in centimeters are listed alongside the underwire sizes.
Compare your measurement with the measurements provided to help determine which size to order.

But What About the Shape of the Underwire?
This is another important consideration!
Two underwires can have a similar curved length but still have different shapes.
One may be wider and flatter, while another may be narrower and more rounded.
That is why it is important to consider both the length and shape of the underwire, especially when replacing an underwire in an existing bra.
If you are making a bra from a pattern, always check which underwire type and size the pattern designer recommends. The underwire must work with the pattern's cup and frame.
Replacing an Underwire in an Existing Bra?
If an underwire has broken or come out of your favourite bra, don't automatically order an underwire based on the bra's label size.
Instead:
1. Remove and measure the remaining underwire or measure the, if possible.
2. Measure its curved length in centimeters.
3. Look at the shape and width of the underwire.
4. Compare it with the underwires available on our website.
If the original underwire is bent or distorted, the measurement may not be accurate.
And remember, even if the measurement matches, a different underwire shape may not fit the bra in exactly the same way.
Can I Measure the Underwire While It Is Still Inside My Bra?
Yes, you can! You don't have to remove the underwire from your bra to measure it.
Use a piece of string or wool and follow the curve of the underwire inside the bra's casing, from one end to the other.
Mark where the underwire starts and ends, then straighten the string and measure it against a ruler in centimeters.
Important: Make sure you're measuring the actual underwire, not the full length of the casing, as the casing may extend beyond the ends of the wire.
For the most accurate measurement, removing the underwire is preferable, but measuring it inside the bra can give you a useful guide without damaging your bra.
A Final Reminder💕
Please don't assume that because you wear a particular bra size, you automatically need the same numbered underwire size.
Different manufacturers use different sizing systems, and even different bra styles from the same brand may use different underwires.
Taking a few minutes to measure your existing underwire can help you avoid ordering the wrong size.
Measure first, compare the measurements, and then choose your underwire!👙🧵
